Meet our herd!
Our heritage breeding cohort is currently made up of a purebred Gloucestershire Old Spot (GOS) herd, a purebred Tamworth herd and a purebred Berkshire Herd. We work hard and travel far to source high quality genetics and are working to develop proven 3-way hybrids that will grow faster than their purebred parents and be more vigorous too!
We have piglets available year round since we now have 20 sows breeding at varying intervals. Our purebred litters are not always predictable in their timing as we run our boars with the females most of the year and let them sort out the details! We sell breedstock but currently our offerings are not registered. Our herd parents are all registered but we are not currently set up to register our piglets.
We chose the Tamworth breed because purebred herds are difficult to find in the northeast. Tamworths are one of the oldest breeds of swine but they are currently listed as “threatened” in the US by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust because they do not do well in “modern” pork production programs. They are typically long and lean and produce fantastic quality meat while offering some leaner genetics good for crossing with typically fattier breeds like the GOS.
Our GOS herd hails originally from the UK and were known as an “orchard pig” because they would clean up downed fruit in the fall. They graze and forage very well and are amazing mothers. They have a reputation as a “lard breed” because they store fat when fed aggressively with a “normal” swine ration that is mostly corn and soy. To optimize meat quality we feed less corn and more barley and pasture forage.
Berkshires have been a more recent addition over the last two years as we are pursuing the best quality genetics for great pork and pasture hardened feeders. Our Berks are from old line stock, which you can see in their very erect ears. They were selected to add meat quality that the Berkshire breed are known for with significant intramuscular fat (marbling) and dark red meat from foraging.
Our pork for your family
We offer whole and half sections of our own pastured pork custom processed for sale. We also sell individual cuts that are USDA butchered if you want to buy a smaller quantity.
